About this tool

Venn diagrams show that groups share members: audiences reached by more than one channel, customers who bought from two categories, requirements met by several candidate tools. Paste the set names and their sizes and you get two or three overlapping circles, each scaled by how large its set is, with translucent fills so the shared regions read clearly.

One thing is deliberately not claimed here. The circles are sized by set, but the overlapping regions are not scaled to the size of the intersections. Making every overlap area exactly proportional is a geometry problem with no solution for many three-set combinations, and tools that appear to do it are usually drawing something approximate and hoping you do not check. This one places the circles by a fixed rule and lets area carry only the claim it can support: how big each set is.

For the same reason, stick to two or three sets. Four-circle diagrams cannot represent every possible combination of memberships, which is why the four-set versions you see are usually ellipses arranged to look convincing rather than to be correct. If you have four groups, a small table of counts communicates more than a diagram that quietly leaves regions out.

Frequently asked questions

How do I lay out the data?

One row per set: the set name, then its size. So three rows give three circles. Two or three sets are supported — that is the point where a Venn diagram stops being readable, and beyond three circles it is impossible to draw every overlap correctly anyway. A header row is optional and skipped automatically.

Does the overlap area show the size of the intersection?

No, and this is worth being clear about. Circle area represents each set's size, but the overlap only says that an intersection exists — it is not scaled to how big that intersection is. Pasted tables rarely carry reliable intersection counts, and solving circle positions so that every overlap area is exactly right has no solution at all for many three-set combinations. Drawing an arbitrary overlap and calling it proportional would be the dishonest option.

Why is my smallest circle bigger than its number suggests?

Circles have a minimum size relative to the largest one. Without it, a set of 1 next to a set of 1,000 becomes a dot you cannot see or label — and with three sets, circles that small would drift apart until they no longer touch, which stops being a Venn diagram at all.

Can I label the regions?

Set names are drawn next to their circles and each circle shows its size. The overlapping regions are left unlabelled, for the same reason the areas are not proportional: any number written there would imply a precision the layout cannot honour.

Does anything get uploaded?

No. The diagram is drawn on this page and the PNG export goes through your browser's Canvas API at 2x resolution. Audience sizes and overlap figures stay local.
